1. SQUASH COMMITTEE - welcome to new Chairman Mark Davis

Dom has decided it is time to stand down as Chairman and concentrate on increased babysitting duties and we would like to thank him for his hard work on the committee in recent years. We are delighted to welcome Mark Davis as the new Chairman of the Squash Committee. Mark is a well known face at the club and a long term squash player in the leagues and teams both at Dunnings and EGTSRC. He is a regular racketball player and club night attendee on Mondays and Thursdays where he will demonstrate his excellent boast shots from the backhand corner when you’re least expecting it!!

2. NEW SQUASH COACH - Giles Cowdell

With Giles making the step up to become a full time tennis / squash coach he has agreed to act as the EGTSRC club coach for squash and racketball. Individual coaching, fitness, court and racquet skill sessions are available for beginners, improvers, tennis-to-racketball players and team players needing to sharpen up. Take advantage and give Giles a ring on 07870 644454 to work out a plan to suit you. Giles has also put in place the following group events:

3. INTRODUCTION TO MARKING - Friday 10th September 7pm - essential for Team players!!

Do you know the difference between a let and a stroke? Or when to call Fault, Hand out, Up, Down? And how to fill in a marking sheet? With the new season fast approaching we need to start thinking about matches and refresh ourselves with the rules of squash and match play.

Giles is therefore holding a light hearted marking course this Friday at 7pm to give practical advice including playing some points and having a go at scoring. if there are any points you would like covered please email Giles before Friday on . The evening is open to everyone but It would be useful for all team members to attend so please contact your captains Joe, Keith and Heather to confirm you can go so we have an idea of numbers.

4. RACKETBALL COACHING for all - Thursday 23rd September

Giles is planning to trial racketball coaching once a month starting Thursday 23rd September. This will be open to everybody at the club and in particular any tennis players looking to try out RB in the winter months. Racquets and balls will be provided if necessary. Again please email Giles if you are interested to give him an idea of numbers

Monday evenings - squash
Thursday evenings - racketball
last Tuesday of the month - ladies squash

The club nights are an excellent way of picking up a few games in a sociable mixed format with players of all abilities from beginners to 1st teamers. So just turn up and play - and stay for a drink after. Heather has organised the first ladies squash night on Tuesday 28th September with food after.

6. BOX LEAGUES - squash and racketball

Since being allowed back on court post-lockdown we have started running the box leagues again but on a low-key basis. The leagues are based on a two month cycle with the current racketball league running until the end of September and the new squash league until the end of October. We have started a new England Squash recommended scoring system with players sharing 10 points and will eventually get back to promotion and relegation once sufficient players have signed up. The last leagues pre-Covid had circa 50 entrants across both S/RB and it would be great to get back to these numbers in the coming months. If you would like to sign up for the next leagues please email me on

7. LADIES TEAM squash

We are waiting to hear whether the ladies will be playing league squash this season. Plenty of enthusiasm from our talented ladies (still led by Heather but she would love to pass the baton to someone else please!) but it’s more a case of whether there are any other clubs in Sussex prepared to enter a team to give us some competition.

8. MENS TEAM squash

After the heroics of the pre-covid 2019 season when they finished top of their league, the 1st team have been promoted to Sussex Division 2 East. Joe Collier is the Captain this year and the opening fixtures are as follows:

Home : Tuesday 21st September - 7.30pm v Acorns Copthorne 2
Away : Friday 15th October - 7.30 pm v Brighton 2
Home : Tuesday 26th October - 7.30pm v Cooden 1

The 2nd team under the continued guidance of Keith Wilson will be playing in Sussex Division 5 East with opening fixtures as follows:

Home : Friday 24th September - 7.30pm v David Lloyd 2
Away : Wednesday 6th October - 7.40pm v Weald 3
Home : Friday 12th November - 7.30pm v Dolphin 4

Keith will be calling on as many players as possible to help with his 2nd team squad rotation system enabling as many people as possible to be included in team squash. If you want to join in please contact either Joe or Keith or have a word on Monday Club night

Plans are in hand to start these again as soon as possible. The mens and ladies squash open championships is a definite and scheduled to start in early Spring 2022.

Please continue to book your courts in advance on the website. Courts 1 and 2 have reverted to identical starting times with the glass back staggered. 50p to book a court for 40 mins and £1 for the light meter.

Between Roger as organiser and Giles as coach there has been a big push to take squash out into the primary schools in and around East Grinstead then to offer the more talented children the opportunity to attend follow up sessions at the club. Before the summer break, Giles provided successful mini squash sessions at St Mary’s and Baldwins Hill schools with exercises to test dexterity and coordination skills. He had a very enthusiastic response from the children. Thanks also to Gareth Williams for unlocking more funding by way of a £2500 grant from Gatwick Airport Community trust enabling us to target all the schools in the area. Felbridge Primary have already signed up for the Autumn term.

The club has worked hard to establish good anti-Covid procedures. However Covid is still with us and we need to continue to be sensible both on court and off. Wash your hands before and after matches, keep your hands off the walls and use a mask around the club if you prefer. The showers are open but you may prefer to come changed and shower at home. If you have any symptoms, take a lateral flow test before coming. Be considerate of other people’s wishes if they prefer a more cautious approach.
