Squash and Racketball Court Refurbishment

Happy New Year Everyone

Further to the agreement at the last AGM Meeting in November to go ahead with the squash and racketball court refurbishment, I am delighted to confirm that the work is scheduled to commence on Monday 22nd January: the work will take 2 weeks to complete and during this time there will be only one court available for booking so we have decided to suspend club nights on Thursday 25th, Monday 29th and Thursday 1st. Courts will reopen on Monday 5th Feb for Squash club night at 6.00pm.

The courts were built 50 years ago and its fantastic news for our club that once the work is completed, we will have modern, bright and up to date courts. We have managed to obtain a grant of £17k from Mid Sussex Council to help towards the funding but this is still a significant club investment in our facilities.

So what are we getting?

Courts

Glass Back - Refurbished floor & walls, repainted courts & lines, one-way screening and new LED light units.
1 and 2 will have completely new sprung flooring (the existing maple floor is on batons with no suspension at all), refurbished walls, repainted lines, glass doors with one-way screening and new LED light units.

Court building
New glass balustrades fitted which will help with spectator viewing, open up the whole area and vastly improve the look.
New flooring and carpeting will be laid on the entrance and balcony.
Storage will be built under the stairs, this is always useful and will improve the look of the area.
Lastly, we will be painting the walls in the lobby to courts 1 and 2 and introducing a water dispenser. This will make the whole area far more welcoming to all.

The squash and racketball participation at our club continues to grow which is fantastic to see and this year we have 2 ladies teams in the Sussex Squash Division (there is only one other club in Sussex that also has 2 ladies teams) and we have 3 men’s teams .This is the first time we have had 3 men’s teams participating in leagues for over 10 years and shows how our club is growing, not just in squash and racketball participation but in terms of membership numbers, tennis participation and takings behind the bar. Unsurprisingly I understand from Stuart that December was a record month, fantastic to see as all profit goes back into the club.

If anyone has any questions or queries at all about the refurbishment, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Best Wishes
Mark

Flooring
The maple floors that are being taken up will be available for any club members to either reuse (garden furniture or relay as flooring, we can’t guarantee sizes and damage, but I know at other clubs members have reused the wood to make garden furniture etc). The floors will be taken up on Wednesday 24th January so if anyone wants to come up and take some (great firewood as well) then please do so from midday on Wednesday 24 until 5 pm on Thursday 25th. Any wood after this time will be either sold or scrapped, any queries in advance please contact Mark Davis, markpdavis@live.com or call 07769-356866
