Dear members,
We hope that you are off to an active start in 2025. The club seems as busy as ever and dry January sales of lime and soda water and 0% alcohol drinks are soaring!
2024 saw a record year for bar takings, so thank you again for your continued custom and to Stuart who has done a ‘Sterling’ job transforming the bar over the last 5 years.
What follows is a quick update on the bar and some of the events that we have planned for the next couple of months.
1. Six Nations Rugby
As this year’s tournament is free to air on BBC and ITV, we can show some of the key games in the clubhouse. Posters will be going up soon detailing which matches are on when the bar is open, starting on Friday 31 January at 8pm.
Come along and support your favourite team and enjoy a few drinks along with your fellow members.
2. Private Event Saturday 1 Feb 2025 from 7pm
The club will be closing after the end of the Ireland v England Rugby match, from approximately 7pm for a private party. We are keen to support a handful of other events throughout 2025 on a Saturday night. If you are interested in using the clubhouse for this, please e-mail bar@egtsc.org or speak to Andy Humphreys, Marc Razzell or Kari Thomas.
3. Wine and Food Pairing Evening Saturday 22 Mar 2025
A new event for the club – hosted by our very own wine aficionado, Bill Rolfe. This will be a fun evening which will take you around the world on a tasting journey. We are planning for the wine, and accompanying food, to be a cut above the ordinary. Tickets will be £20 a person, with all profits going to your club. Places will be limited and a more detailed e-mail about the evening will follow very shortly.
4. Other Bar and House and Grounds News
You will notice that we have installed a new ‘American’ style fridge freezer in the kitchen which will provide a much bigger capacity to store fresh and frozen food and provide ice and filtered water on demand. Please keep it clean and treat it with care - it should last for years to come.
We are reviving our plans for an improved bar cellar and store, as approved at the 2023 AGM. The current store is not fit for purpose and is starting to deteriorate rapidly. We hope to make progress on its replacement in the first half 2025.
The General Committee has taken the decision to raise bar prices. The bar must make a positive financial contribution to the upkeep and development of the club. Despite our record sales, the net profit of the bar has been declining, largely due to increasing staff wages and NI payments.
Please do remember though that we are still very, very reasonably priced and hope not to implement any increases for the foreseeable future.
And Finally…
Ian Russell and Alan Swan would like to thank everyone who supported the charity Squash and Racketball event in aid of St Catherine’s hospice on the 29 December 2024. A record sum of £810 was raised to support them with the invaluable service that they provide to patients and loved ones.
What a fantastic achievement!
