Women’s tennis social (16 March)

Today is International Women’s Day!

To celebrate International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, we are organising a Women’s Tennis Social on Sunday 16 March, starting at 3pm. This will be followed by a short talk about female membership at the club at 5pm, followed by a few nibbles.

All women at the club are invited to play… and all members are obviously welcome to come and show their support! Please join the following whatapp group to register your interest: https://chat.whatsapp.com/LBuvg9qyk6nDFmnYcjHRnF

See you next week!

About International Women’s Day (IWD)

According to the World Economic Forum, at the current rate of progress, reaching full gender parity will take until 2158… And so the theme for this year’s IWD is to help #AccelerateAction.

Women in sports have certainly come a long way, and today is also a chance to reflect on the progress that has been made.

However there is still a lot to do: Across nearly every age group, there is still inequity in the time and frequency that men and women participate in sports, with a variety of barriers exacerbating that disparity, such as gender stereotypes, gender norms and female underrepresentation.

Although Tennis might seem to be doing well (some of the top female players are the highest paid sports women globally!), according to the LTA:

  • Female (vs. male) participation at a local level is about 35% only, and this number drops to 25% when it comes to participation in LTA competitions
  • 1/3 of tennis officials are female and 1/4 of accredited coaches are female

In Judy Murray’s words, “Sport has the power to transform lives, build resilience and open doors, yet too often, women and girls are still side-lined.”

IWD is not about blaming or dividing, it is about encouraging collective action… and so please, no matter your gender, make today your day and do what you can to make a positive difference for women!
