EGTS&R Efforts on Female Participation

To all members,

Back in March, to mark both International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, we held a women’s tennis social event, followed by a discussion on gender equality focusing on what the LTA numbers are telling us about the state of Tennis in the UK but also what our own membership numbers for the club have to say. We also discussed why it is important to get girls and women more involved in sports, what the LTA have been doing and what we could all try to do to help improve female participation at the club (slightly behind LTA national average, particularly amongst younger players).

This specific event was very well attended and left many of us with a lot of food for thoughts… But that also means that a few ideas and proposals were subsequently put forward: While some of them have already been implemented, a few others were approved at the most recent Club's General Committee meeting and will be rolled out soon.

We wanted to share with you a small sample of these initiatives:
- To provide social tennis opportunities for women that might lack the confidence to join in the regular mixed-in sessions: Women-only social sessions will be held once a month (watch this space)
- To create more competitive opportunities for women on the tennis side: Women will now be allowed to compete in the Men’s box leagues (pilot underway with interested 1st team players)
- To help reduce the stigma surrounding menstruation, but also reduce some of the anxiety and stress that it can create for women/girls who play sports: We will be offering free sanitary products in the women's bathrooms (coming soon)

We as a club are committed to gender equality: We not only want to create a safe and inclusive environment, but also ensure we provide equal opportunities and encourage participation for all genders. We would like to keep this conversation going and would welcome any further constructive contributions that you may have on the topic. Please feel free to contact Sabine Gaouyer (sabgaouyer@gmail.com) with any ideas, comments or suggestions.

Thanks,
EGTS&R Club's General Committee
