Tennis update

Great to see lots of courts being booked and tennis being played despite all the rain we have had.

I just wanted to give you an update on a few bits and pieces:

Teams

Many of you enjoy playing tennis at our social sessions and at other times. If you are keen to play competitive tennis where you take part in matches against other clubs but you are not currently doing so then please do contact our Ladies Captain (Sabine Gaouyer), our Men’s Captain (Morgan Webb) or myself. Our contact details are on the mycourts system or do have a chat with one of us when we are at the club.

In April we are entering the Horam League again where we play other Sussex teams on Monday evenings in the summer season both at home and away. We try and mx things up with the Horam League so that we give opportunities to those who may be new to team tennis and then we have been sprinkling in some seasoned players! When selecting the teams for the Horam League this year I would ideally like us to give priority to those who are not currently representing the club much or at all in other teams. Therefore, if you have played for other teams less than 3 times during the last 12 months (including not having played at all) and are not currently on the Horam League WhatsApp chat then we would be particularly keen to hear from you. Please do contact Jonathan Guy (who will be the Captain for the Horam League this summer) or myself if you are interested or would like some more information.

Club Social

These sessions on Wednesdays (daytime and evening), Saturdays and Sundays continue to be popular. It’s great to see members coming along regularly and enjoying some good games. It’s open to all levels. If you have not been for a while or at all, please do come along.

If you do come along to club social I would really like to invite you to offer to become a facilitator please. There is no commitment to have to facilitate a certain number of sessions and the more we have the less sessions we each have to cover.

Being a facilitator involves the following:

Placing players into a ‘suitable’ 4 to play doubles. This is not a perfect science but I suggest where possible to consider the level of the person playing. So, for example, I would ideally not place some-one fairly new to tennis with 3 extremely experienced players. I may however make up a 4 comprised of similar standards or balance the players in another way to hopefully ensure everyone has a good game.
Provide a friendly welcome, especially to new or potentially new members.
Access the tennis balls for the session which are in a cupboard with a code and put them away afterwards.
Access the special key to turn the floodlights on and off for evening sessions.

You will see that the role is not onerous and it makes a huge difference to have some-one help in this way especially when the sessions are busy. Thank you so much for those who do facilitate already and to Dominique who organises the facilitators team. Please speak to Dominique or myself if you would be willing to be added to the team even if you have limited availability or would prefer to cover part of a session only. All those who facilitate are really appreciated. Plenty of support and help also given to new facilitators.

Coaching

I’d just like to mention that our coaching team has been offering pay and play coaching for some time now. Some of the sessions have been low on uptake, so if you want these coaching sessions to continue to be offered, then please scan the coaching QR code in the clubhouse and from that you can then join the WhatsApp coaching group. It is then really simple to sign up for a group coaching session. You can also join up to play cardio tennis using this link.

Do remember our coaching team also offers individual coaching.

Summer Tournament

More details to follow in relation to this year’s event. In the meantime, please can you all make sure you have the date for Finals day in your diaries and calendars as this is a great annual social event for the club with a BBQ and plenty of great tennis games to watch. This year’s finals day will be on Saturday 4th July 2026 .

Regards,

Julian Holbrook
